Uni is about realising your potential
I am a proud Worimi man and a candidate for a Master's degree in Fine Arts at Sydney College of the Arts. There were many challenges along the way but looking back I’d say it was a very worthwhile experience.
The major challenge was changing from engineering to visual arts. It went against the grain – less chance of a job and so on. But university is not simply about getting a degree, it’s about realising your potential through multiple streams of opportunity, education and cultural development.
I wasn’t really aware of my Aboriginality until I went to university. Being fair-skinned and identifying as such, it was students and staff in similar situations who fired my passion about Aboriginal issues and identity.
I am currently completing my studies and creating my own studio to continue my art practice next year.
I now realise that there are so many more things out there that I can achieve, and even though I’m not sure what they are, through my degree I have found a security in not knowing.
As long as you have the will to achieve something, don’t worry about what it is, you will get there at uni.
