8th June 2012
The Kennedy Awards for Excellence in NSW Journalism will recognise and celebrate the quality of news reporting, storytelling and creativity in the metropolitan and regional media. The Awards are named after the legendary Sydney crime reporter, Les Kennedy who died of cancer in August 2011 at the age of 53. The awards will also honour the memory and enormous contributions of four other highly regarded journalists who also died last year – Cliff Neville, Sean Flannery, Paul Lockyer and Peter Ruehl.
The Kennedy Awards has formed a partnership with the Charlie Perkins Trust for Children & Students to support a range of programs to improve the health and welfare of Indigenous children and to improve the educational opportunities for Indigenous students. All net proceeds from the Kennedy Awards event will go to support the work of the Perkins Trust.
The inaugural Kennedy Awards night, to be held on the anniversary of Les Kennedy’s death, Friday 10 August 2012 at The Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney, will be hosted by Ellen Fanning, former presenter ABC Radio and television current affairs presenter.
The awards, across 28 categories, including ‘Most Outstanding Coverage of Indigenous Affairs’, will be judged by a selection of respected leaders in NSW journalism looking for exceptional examples of ground breaking, gutsy and creative journalism, demonstrating a profound and enduring impact in Sydney and the NSW regional areas. They will also take into account resources, research, preproduction, preparation, logistical challenges, public interest and community benefit.
The Kennedy Award for NSW Journalist of the Year will be presented by the NSW Premier, the Hon. Barry O’Farrell. The Deputy Premier, the Hon. Andrew Stoner, the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, the Hon. Michael Gallacher, Aboriginal Affairs Minister, the Hon.
