About the scholarship

Summary

  • The Aboriginal Cadetship Program provides an opportunity for Australian Aboriginals studying a degree in Social Work, Psychology or other relevant human services, to gain valuable work experience whilst still studying and allows easy access to employment opportunities on completion of their studies. The Indigenous Cadetship Support (ICS) program helps students by providing money to cover living costs and also provides an opportunity for paid work experience that is linked to their course of study.

Further financial information

  • In addition to study allowances worth ($12,000 per year) students also receive $1,000 per year towards books and equipment and the opportunity to receive $1,938.29 (before tax) per fortnight for a 12 week paid work placement during semester breaks.

Applicant criteria

The applicant must

  • identify as an Australian Aboriginal and be accepted as such in the community in which they live, or have lived
  • be studying full time at a university located within Western Australia
  • be enrolled in a diploma, advanced diploma or first undergraduate degree course in the area of Social Work, Psychology or other relevant human services course of study
Selection criteria

Successful applicants based on

  • ability to engage with and build strong working relationships with a diverse range of people (particularly Aboriginal people) and communities
  • demonstrated organisational and planning skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities
  • strong communication skills (written, verbal and non-verbal)
  • ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information
